AI Background Removal (beta)

Automatically remove the background from every product photo you upload — powered by your own remove.bg account.

Smart Image Resize Pro can remove the background from every product photo automatically, the moment you upload it — no photo editor, no manual selecting. The product is lifted off its original backdrop and placed on a clean background instead, so a photo taken on a messy desk or a busy shelf comes out looking like it was shot in a studio.

This feature is available on Pro only.

How it works

Smart Image Resize Pro connects to remove.bg, a background-removal service you sign up for yourself — it is not resold and there is no extra per-photo charge from us.

• You pay remove.bg directly, based on how many photos you run. Their free tier renews every month with 50 background removals, and paid credits cover anything beyond that.

• Removal happens in the background right after upload, together with resizing and the rest of your Image Uniformity settings, so it doesn't slow down the upload itself.

• Only the content types selected under Process Images from (Product images, Product category images, Product brand images) are sent for background removal — same scope as the rest of Image Uniformity.

Setting it up

1. Go to WooCommerce → Smart Image Resize → Settings.

2. Turn on AI Background Removal.

   
3. Don't have a remove.bg account yet? Use the Get a free remove.bg API key link shown under the field — the first 50 background removals are free.

4. Paste the key into the remove.bg API Key field. Use the eye icon to reveal it and double-check it before saving.

   
5. Click Check Credits to confirm the key works and see how many free and paid credits are left on the account.

   
6. Click Save Settings.

   

From this point on, every new product photo you upload gets its background removed automatically.

Applying it to photos you already have

Turning the setting on only affects new uploads. To clean up your existing catalog, go to the Bulk Resize tab and click Process Existing Images (or Start Processing). It runs through every eligible image once, including background removal.

Credits are never wasted

Each photo only ever has its background removed once. Re-saving your settings or running Bulk Resize again skips any photo that's already been processed, so you're never charged twice for the same picture.

Getting the original photo back

Before removing a background, Smart Image Resize Pro saves a copy of the untouched original. To undo it:

• One photo — use the restore action on that image in the Media Library.

• Everything at once — go to the Help tab and use Restore All Images under Restore Original Images. This reverts every processed photo (not just background removal) back to how it was before the plugin touched it, including thumbnails.

Background color and transparency

The cut-out product is placed on whatever you've set as the Unified Background Color in Settings — leave that field empty and the result keeps a transparent background (saved as PNG) instead of being filled in.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own account with a background-removal service? Yes. Smart Image Resize Pro connects to remove.bg, which you sign up for yourself and pay directly based on how many photos you run. It is not resold and there is no extra per-photo charge.

Is remove.bg free to use? No — remove.bg is a paid service. You get 50 free background removals every month; anything beyond that draws from paid credits you buy directly through your remove.bg account.

Will it redo photos I've already processed and charge me twice? No. Each photo is only processed once — already-processed photos are skipped on re-save or bulk reprocessing.

Can I get my original photo back? Yes, at any time — either per-photo from the Media Library, or for your whole catalog at once from the Help tab.

Does it work on photos I already uploaded, not just new ones? Yes. Run Bulk Resize once and it cleans up your existing catalog the same way as new uploads.

Is this available on the free version? No, AI Background Removal is a Pro feature. The free version shows it as a locked option with a link to upgrade.

Does it work with any WooCommerce theme? Yes. The photo is processed before it's saved, so it looks right wherever it's used — shop page, product pages, and anywhere else the image appears.
